Gas mercury removal
Description
It is not unusual for gas streams to contain 1 to 10 micrograms/Nm3 (approx. 0.1 to 10 ppbv) of mercury. Mercury can attack aluminum in downstream brazed aluminium plate fin heat exchangers used in most modern cryogenic hydrocarbon recovery plants or liquefaction plants. The gas mercury removal system by Pietro Fiorentini uses a sulfur based trapping material which reacts with the element to form cinnabar (HgS) on the bed.
The trapping material is carried on activated carbon,zeolite or alumina. Typically, mercury removal units are designed to remove the mercury to 0.001 micrograms/Nm3.
